5399 Week 1 - SBEC Self Assessment Reflection

SBEC Superintendent Competencies Self-Assessment:
As I did my self-assessment for this course I really tried to focus on the scoring key from the description provided in the course outline for indicating skills as strength, competent or improvement needed. Once the assessment was completed I had marked about the same amount “S” and “C”. I marked two indicators with an “I”.
As I compared my self-assessment for this course with the one I did in the first course I realized how much I have grown and learned over the last eight months. In the first course I had very few indicators marked with an “S”, many “C’s” and several (almost as many) “I’s”. The course lectures, colleague discussions, readings, assignments and internship activities have helped provide me with the knowledge and tools to continue improving my skills in the 10 competency areas. My level of indicators marked competent, vary from just a little above improvement needed to just below a strength; though I am not sure I would feel comfortable leading the activity as stated in the scoring indicator. Again, this included several indicators which back in the first course I marked “I” and was able to mark “C” in this last course as a result of the program.
I have gained a lot of valuable information and knowledge over the last eight months. I would like to continue to improve my knowledge and skills in Competency 8. Although I was able to mark two indicators as strength and seven as competent, I marked two indicators with an “I”. I feel I need to improve my knowledge in the area of budgeting. Especially with the current financial situation in Texas Education, every dollar is crucial. My strongest Competencies are 1 and 7. It appeared I grew the most in Competency 7. In focusing on developing a three year staff development plan I would like to focus on Competency 8 along with 2-6 and 9. In all these competencies I had marked the majority of indicators with “C”.
I will continue to develop my knowledge and skills in all areas of the ten competencies; including indicators marked “S”, as this will only improve my skills and knowledge as an educational leader.

  1. Todd I'm really glad that you are in a position to see yourself serving in the role of Superintendent one day....I know you will make a great one. As a second year AP I'm just now starting to see that one day I'd like to serve as campus principal (some of that confidence is due to this Supt. program, collaborating with and learning about others' experiences in this program). I too identify with servant leadership. As a part of internship activity 38a my Superintendent recommended/gave me a great book on leadership, of which I'm reading now.
